Azimuth: Essays on Memory, Militaries, and Moral Reckoning

Many years ago, I spent three years in the Israeli military, and then additional years in the reserves. I am writing a memoir about those experiences, and about what happened afterwards. Involvement in the military entailed all manner of psychological, moral, and physical experiences, and I want to share those, especially in light of what is now happening in Israel, Palestine, and the Middle East overall.

As I write my own story, I have created this Substack to post reviews and reflections on military memoirs written by others worldwide.

Military conscription, training, and combat are all too often talked about in abstract terms. They are very personal affairs, however, and I want to use this space to explore those through the eyes of the men and women who have chosen to share their experiences, in writing.

An azimuth, in case you are wondering, is a navigational bearing, with both practical and metaphorical meanings.

Azimuth journeys through the inner landscapes of militarized conflict. Through readings of military memoirs, I reflect on what it means to prepare for and inflict violence on others.
